Celebrating 25 Years of the British International School of Brussels

In 2025, the British International School of Brussels (BISB) marks an important milestone: 25 years of providing a British education to children from around the world in the heart of Europe.

Founded in September 2000, BISB began as a small and ambitious project, welcoming just 32 pupils from a wide range of national backgrounds. From the outset, the school set out to offer more than a curriculum: it aimed to create a place where children would feel happy, confident and inspired to learn.

Located in a striking Art Deco building between NATO and the European institutions, the school benefited early on from its central position and excellent transport links.

25 years BISB

Over the years, BISB has grown organically, guided by a clear child-centred philosophy. The early days required creativity, flexibility and a strong sense of community, with parents and teachers working closely together to build something meaningful. That collaborative spirit remains a defining feature of the school today.

At the core of BISB’s educational approach lies a simple belief: happy children learn best. The school continues to foster a warm, welcoming atmosphere in which pupils feel known, valued and supported. Former students from across the world regularly return to share how their time at BISB shaped them, laying strong foundations for both personal and academic success.

As the school developed, it expanded into two dedicated buildings – Acorn and Oak – reflecting its motto: “Mighty Oaks from Little Acorns Grow.” Despite being an inner-city school, BISB benefits from a beautiful garden playground and makes full use of its surroundings.

Local museums, parks and forests are regularly integrated into learning, and pupils are often seen exploring, orienteering and engaging with the world beyond the classroom.

BISB also holds a unique place in Brussels as a UN Global School. Having achieved Advocate status with the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, the school places sustainability, responsibility and global citizenship at the heart of its ethos.

Initiatives led by the School Council and Eco Champions, along with collaborations with international partners and the Jane Goodall Institute Belgium, empower pupils to take action and understand their role in shaping a better future.

Through these experiences, BISB pupils develop confidence, optimism and a strong sense of purpose. They are encouraged to believe that positive change is possible and that even small actions can have a meaningful impact.

After 25 years, the British International School of Brussels remains a small, friendly and deeply international primary school, where young learners begin their journey towards becoming thoughtful, responsible and successful global citizens in a rapidly changing world.
