Closure of the Scandinavian School of Brussels in 2020 after nearly 50 years of activity

Founded in 1973, the Scandinavian School of Brussels closed its doors at the end of the 2020 school year.

For almost 30 years, the school operated on the prestigious Argenteuil Castle campus in Waterloo. It offered education based on a blend of Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish curricula.
Primarily intended for children of Scandinavian expatriate families living in Belgium, the school welcomed thousands of Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, and Finnish students over the decades.
However, in recent years, the Scandinavian School of Brussels experienced a significant drop in enrolment.
In 2015, the school had around 300 students, and by 2020, that number had fallen to just 40.

Several factors explain the decline in student numbers

The main cause appears to be a gradual decrease in the number of Scandinavian expatriate families in Belgium.
Scandinavian institutions and companies in Belgium have significantly reduced the number of positions once allocated to their employees.
Secondly, the COVID-19 pandemic very likely accelerated this trend.
Finally, the ongoing competition from international schools in Brussels remains a strong factor.

To cope with the declining number of students, the Scandinavian School of Brussels established a collaboration in 2019 with the European School of Brussels-Argenteuil (EEBA), also located on the Argenteuil campus.
The Scandinavian School also adapted its offering by only providing the Swedish upper secondary programme, which allowed graduates to pursue further education in Sweden or abroad.

Unfortunately, this new collaboration did not succeed in reviving enrolment. In June 2020, the school decided to cease operations entirely.

Since 2020, some members of staff from the former Scandinavian School of Brussels have been integrated into the European School of Brussels-Argenteuil (EEBA).
The Swedish upper secondary programme is still offered, but now as part of the European School of Brussels-Argenteuil (EEBA).
